Our history...
In 1924, Guy C. Lee started a small millwork and manufacturing company in the heart of downtown Smithfield. Over the next few decades, Guy C. Lee Manufacturing expanded to include a retail building supply store and a sawmill. Guy Lee recognized that a successful business must be able to change strategies to meet the needs of its customers and the demands of the market. Because of his leadership, the company survived during lean times and thrived during economic booms.
In 1959, Mr. Ross Lampe, Guy Lee’s son-in-law, bought the company. Under his direction, the company continued to expand and evolve. More retail locations were opened in Raleigh, Apex, Clayton, Morehead City, Sneads Ferry, Kitty Hawk, Shallotte, and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. The sawmill division was further developed and began treating lumber to be sold at the stores. A construction lending program was established to help customers finance their projects. The company grew as eastern North Carolina grew.
Guy C. Lee Building Materials now has two more building supplies in New Bern and Wilmington, an expanded construction lending program, and a dedicated millwork in Selma. Today, a century later, the business is still owned by Guy Lee’s direct descendants and is still headquartered in downtown Smithfield, just a few blocks from the original location.
